Sighhh

So I’ve been helping my dad sell his house (www.jacobspinney.com/house) and I’m witnessing first-hand how aggravating and stressful the whole thing is. If you have the house completely paid off, then it’s a lot easier. But if you don’t and you still have to make monthly payments, then you’re gonna end up having to pay two mortgages every month until you’re actually able to get the house sold which can be anywhere from 1 to 9 months . . . . which fucking sucks balls.

Phrase quibble of the day

“Do you understand?”

Every now and again people use this phrase. I see it being used by parents especially. This is a very bad phrase to use when you actually do want them to understand. Because the implication of the phrase is that if you didn’t understand, then it’s your fault. So if you don’t understand, then they’re insulting your intelligence. If you do understand, then they were still questioning your intelligence.

A much better phrase to use might be, “does this make sense?” The implication of this phrase is that if they didn’t understand, it’s not because they weren’t intelligent enough, it was because of bad wording in the explanation. Some more substitutions might be . . . “did I say that right?” . . . “what are your thoughts on that?”
