I think at the core of everyone is a need to be special somehow; the need for a feeling of some kind of significance. Performers like myself fulfill that need by entertaining people. I also fulfill that need by creating original illusions as well. For others though, they might fulfill that need by making money. I also know there’s a huge number of people who fulfill that need of feeling special by searching for someone to fall in love with or by having children; knowing that they’ve created something unique. But when people don’t have this sense of progression toward this goal of doing something unique they become depressed and existential. I wonder if that could be a factor for religiosity. When television first started, many magicians were pessimistic about there being any possibility for magic on television since the public was aware very early on that, on television, you could literally make anything happen that you wanted to through the use of camera trickery. Magicians feared that if someone saw a magician on TV, they’d automatically assume that it was all just camera tricks. When the early TV magicians such as Mark Wilson and Paul Daniels first started, they set these worries at ease a bit by emphasizing very strongly to their audiences that nothing they do on television is done through the use of camera trickery.

So yesterday I did a double show with Cabaret Boheme down in Tucson and it was really a lot of fun. I’m having a hard time trying to figure out which of the female cast members I have more of a crush on. But that’s not really the story of this post . . .
After I did the two shows, Dana, her brothers and Sarah, and I went out to dinner. On our way there there was a homeless woman asking for help. I had $15 on me so I gave her $5. I think the idea of putting people into categories, especially people putting themselves into categories is a very bad one, because once you label yourself, you’ve psychologically locked that label in and made it very hard to change. . . One of the reasons I’m not a big fan of AA, not just because it’s explicitly religious and getting government funding and judges are requiring it on people, but because it is a very very VERY bad way of solving the problem of alcoholism. What’s the first step? Admitting you’re an alcoholic? To me, that only strengthens in your mind what you are and indirectly tells you that there’s no way you can change (in fact, that’s another one of the steps of AA, saying you can’t do it, you have to beg your invisible high power to do it for you).
